Highlights

Early gravimetric and seismic studies suggest the existence of a pre-Permian Basin near Port Keats that offers hydrocarbon potential.  Three onshore wells (Kulshill #1, Kulshill #2 and Moyle #1) have indicated the presence of oil and methane in the impermeable Lower Permian and Lower Carboniferous formations.  These formations increase in thickness towards the west and south-west where small gasfields have been discovered in the onshore and offshore segments of the Bonaparte Basin.

  • Offshore Blacktip field provides Darwin’s gas supply.
  • South western onshore areas of the basin are known to hold ~0.4Tcf gas at >90% methane, ~4% ethane, >1% C3+ and low CO2.
  • Offshore Beehive field may contain more than 500million bbls/oil

Onshore Bonaparte Basin

  • Good potential source reservoirs and seals at a number of levels, especially late Proterozoic and Mesozoic
  • 3 petroleum systems identified in the onshore area
  • Includes conventional and unconventional plays
    • Carboniferous Milligans Formation is a source rock and potential gas- condensate/oil shale reservoir
    • Tight sandstone and limestone gas plays (targeted by Advent Energy)
  • Weaber gas field to the south west
  • Also: Victoria/Birrindudu Basins in south east of EPA
  • Some seismic + 3 wells (Cullen 1, Moyle 1 and Kulshill 1)
